Howard Kurtz Scolds Fox For Having Dana Perino Interview Former Boss George W. Bush

CNN’s resident media critic sent out a video on Thursday afternoon criticizing Fox News for having former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino interview her former boss George W. Bush upon the opening of his new presidential library in Dallas, Texas.

According to Howard Kurtz, her interview of Bush represents the exact sort of conflict-of-interest that would be rebuked by conservatives if this were a former Democratic spokesperson interviewing their former boss.

“Can you imagine the reaction at Fox if Obama had left office and [his former spokesman] Robert Gibbs was sent by MSNBC to do the interview?” he asked. “There would be mockery.”

Kurtz’s Daily Download colleague, Lauren Ashburn, took a slightly different tone, arguing that an interview of Bush on such a day like today would have been relatively light anyhow. And besides, Ashburn noted, Perino is openly just a “commentator” and not a “straight journalist.”

“Fair enough, she is a commentator,” Kurtz conceded, but then reiterated: “‘Would Fox News do the same thing with a former Democratic president?’ That is the question that it raises.”
