James Clyburn Envisions Trump as ‘Another Hitler’ or Mussolini When Talking Cabinet on Fox: ‘You Don’t Think That’s a Little Hyperbolic?’

South Carolina Democrat Rep. James Clyburn on Saturday made a direct comparison between president-elect Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler while speaking with Fox’s Neil Cavuto, and he doubled down on the claim after Cavuto asked whether it was “hyperbolic” or not.

Clyburn appeared on the latest Cavuto Live on Fox News to talk about the post-election prospects and challenges for Democrats on Saturday. The congressman, a senior Congressional Black Caucus member, was instrumental in President Joe Biden obtaining the party nomination in 2020 and was a big supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris as the nominee after initially resisting calls for Biden to step aside.

As the two were discussing shifts in the electorate and whether there’s a need for a bigger moderate voice among Democrats, Clyburn said that the country has “gone lurching back to the right.”

“I hope it’s not going as far right as that which happened in Germany in the 1930s,” he said. “But you may remember I forewarned way back in 2018 that I saw this coming. I’ve studied history all of my life. I mean, since being a preteen, I’ve been enamored with this country’s history. And I can tell you what I said back in 2018 on another network is now coming to pass. People chastised me for saying it at that time, but now they are seeing it”

Clyburn has invoked Hilter many times, in fact, including in 2018, 2019, and 2022, for example, and was probably referring to an interview with Don Lemon on CNN that got a lot of attention at the time.

“Are you envisioning another Hitler? Is that what you’re saying?” Cavuto asked.

“That’s exactly what I’m saying. I said the 1930s in Germany!” Clyburn shot back.

“Yes you did,” said Cavuto.

Clyburn also invoked Italian dictator and Hitler ally Benito Mussolini, prompting Cavuto to ask, “So you don’t think that’s a little hyperbolic?”

“No,” said Clyburn, arguing that Trump talking about recess appointments is what’s hyperbolic and Hitler-like.

CLYBURN: We go from left to right in this country. We go from right back left in this country. And I always say, well whether the pendulum is going from left to right or right to left, it always passes through the middle. And so it seems to me we camp out twice as much time in the middle as we do in the right or left.

Now, the country has gone lurching back to the right. I hope it’s not going as far right as that which happened in Germany in the 1930s. But you may remember I forewarned way back in 2018 that I saw this coming. I’ve studied history all of my life.

I mean, since being a preteen, I’ve been enamored with this country’s history. And I can tell you what I said back in 2018 on another network is now coming to pass. People chastised me for saying it at that time, but now they are seeing it.

CAVUTO: Well how are we seeing it? He’s not president yet. I mean, are you envisioning another Hitler? Is that what you’re saying?

CLYBURN: That’s exactly what I’m saying. I said the 1930s in Germany!

CAVUTO: Yes, you did.

CLYBURN: And of course. And we go to Mussolini in Italy. These things –

CAVUTO: So you don’t think that’s a little hyperbolic?

CLYBURN: No, you may think so.

CAVUTO: Okay.

CLYBURN: I’ll tell you what’s happy about it is asking the Senate to approve all your nominees without any vetting. That’s what’s hyperbolic.

And if you, if the Senate were to do that, it would be ceding everything that this country’s built upon. The checks and balances in this country from its very beginning. And let me just tell you, we’re getting ready to celebrate our 250th anniversary as a nation.

I don’t – I want to remind you how we celebrated 100th anniversary as a nation. If you give 1776 as being the founding of this country, then in 1876, it’s when this country took a big lurch, right wing lurch ,and led to Jim Crow. That’s already happened in this country.

CAVUTO: Well, look good. Could I ask you this, though? I know what you’re saying about these recess appointments. You’re concerned about them. A very different case, I understand, but Barack Obama had his own recess appointments. So we’ve seen on the left or the right -.

CLYBURN: For a cabinet? For his cabinet.

CAVUTO: So that’s where you draw the line. That this is going too far.

CLYBURN: Absolutely. This is this administration! And it’s built in … and, you know, I – I admire your ability to try to change the subject. But we are talking about his cabinet here.
