John Bolton Tells Jordan Klepper that a ‘F*cking Moron’ Like Trump Can Still Be Putin’s ‘Useful Idiot’

John Bolton told comedian Jordan Klepper that President Donald Trump can still be a “useful idiot” for Russian President Vladimir Putin despite what he sees as Trump’s own mental shortcomings.

This week, Trump has faced criticism from the left and right over the administration’s approach to dealing with the war in Ukraine. On Wednesday, Trump called Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator” after the Ukraine president claimed that he was repeating Russian propaganda.

During a recent interview with Klepper on the Daily Show, Bolton noted that he believes Trump is not “smart enough” to become a dictator but he can still be a “useful idiot” to authoritarian leaders like Putin.

KLEPPER: What is Trump’s infatuation with Putin?

BOLTON: Well, I think he has a fascination with authoritarian leaders generally. I think Trump would like to be a big guy, but I don’t think he’s smart enough to be a dictator.

KLEPPER: So is Trump. What’s the term? An idiot?

BOLTON: Well, I think Rex Tillerson had the iconic two word description of Trump. The first word I won’t repeat, even on your show, the second of which was moron.

KLEPPER: Okay, I’ll throw it in there f*cking moron.

BOLTON: That’s pretty much on point.

KLEPPER: A f*cking moron.

BOLTON: Right.

KLEPPER: Can a moron still be a useful idiot?

BOLTON: I think the answer to that is yes. And I think Vladimir Putin understands it.
