Late Night Hosts Go Off On Trump For ‘Delay the Election’ Tweet: ‘Casually Suggesting Incinerating American Democracy’

Late-night hosts Seth Meyers, Trevor Noah, and Jimmy Fallon went off on President Donald Trump for suggesting that the U.S. delay the presidential election after claiming mail-in-voting is “inaccurate” and “fraudulent” — Meyers noting that it’s a “flagrant violation of the constitution and the law.”

In a Thursday morning tweet, Trump argued that mail-in-voting would lead to election day problems, later suggesting pushing back the presidential election until Americans could safely go to polls amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Well, here we are,” Meyers said. “We’re less than a 100 days from the presidential election, the economy just had its largest contraction in history, there were more than a million jobless claims for the 19th week in a row, states are recording increases in deaths from an out-of-control pandemic, and a lawless, aspiring autocrat who I guess also believes in demon sperm is sending secret police to American cities to round up protesters while gutting the post office to delay mail-in voting, ignoring Supreme Court decisions, signaling that he’ll refuse to accept the outcome of the election, and now calling for that election to be delayed even though he obviously doesn’t have the power to do that.”

“Oh great, so not only is he casually suggesting incinerating American democracy, he’s doing it like he’s offering hors d’oeuvres at a party,” Meyers added, before pointing out that Trump does not have the right to delay the election.

The host also roasted Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) for telling reporters that Trump’s tweet was simply a joke meant to get the media angry.

“Trump isn’t clever and he certainly doesn’t joke,” Meyers said. “He floats things and then sees if he can get away with it and only if everyone freaks out he suddenly claims it’s a joke.”

The host also went after the media for praising certain Republicans, such as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, for pointing out that Trump does not have the right to move the election — joking that their bar is set far to low.

“And by the way, media, yes, there are some Republicans saying the election will happen on time. Stop giving them credit for that. That’s not a courageous stand. It’s just the bare minimum,” he said. “Just because the bar is all the way on the floor doesn’t mean we have to give them credit for stepping over it. It’s like if your burnout son gets an ‘F’ on a history final and you say, ‘Look who showed up and took the test. I’m so proud of you, Scooch!’”

Noah similarly roasted the president for pulling a “move of a dictator” by ignoring the Constitution and suggesting a delay in the 2020 election — noting that not being allowed to do something has never stopped him in the past.

“Trump is just casually throwing it out there with a tweet with a bunch of question marks, like he’s in a group text to bail on happy hour,” he joked of his “alarming proposal.” “‘Hey, y’all, Nov. 3rd’s not great for me — maybe we reschedule to 2021?’”

Noah pointed out that Trump’s tweet comes as the economy faces a crisis and as deaths from the coronavirus pandemic continue to hit record-highs — joking that his new campaign strategy is to just skip the election altogether.

“He can’t reschedule the election,” Noah said. “For starters, both candidates are like 200 years old — I mean, we gotta keep things moving.”

“We’ll still have the election on Nov. 3, but he’ll probably just add a hundred days to August,” added the host. “And sure, maybe the court overturns it, but that might not happen until August 73rd.”

Fallon joked that Trump is suggesting delaying the presidential election, “not the release date for Bill and Ted 3″  — noting that he’s acting like a friend who’s “been crashing at your house for a while but keeps dropping hints he might need some more time.”

“Americans were like, ‘How long a delay are we talking about here? Months, like your response to Covid? Years, like your response to Putin? Or decades, like a hug for Don Jr.? Just give us a hint,’” he said.

The host later joked that the president would try and get Republicans to vote on November 3, but would have “Democrats vote at a later date. T.B.D.”
