Michigan Newspaper Issues Correction After Trump Uses Old Article To Tout 2013 ‘Man Of The Year’ Claim
Former President Donald Trump presented a printout of an Oakland Press article at a speech in Detroit as proof that he was named Michigan’s “Man of the Year” in 2013, only for the publication to issue a correction hours later, claiming it was never true.
During his address to the Detroit Economic Club on Thursday, where he laid out policies aimed at revitalizing the American auto industry, Trump revived the claim and pulled the article from his pocket and declared: “And guess what? They found it.”
He then read from the article, quoting: “The county party gave Trump the man of the year award at the dinner, too.”
However, the Oakland Press quickly moved to correct the record. Just hours later, an editor’s note appeared in the story, clarifying that Trump had never been named “Man of the Year” in 2013.
The note explicitly states: “A reference in the 2023 story, headlined ‘Oakland County GOP to honor Donald Trump,’ about the 2013 award was incorrect. Trump was the keynote speaker at the 2013 dinner in Novi, which drew a record crowd. He was not honored as Man of the Year. During the 2023 dinner, Trump was honored as the Man of the Decade, which was reported in the 2023 story.”
This isn’t the first time Trump has claimed the honor. According to The Washington Post’s Fact Checker database, Trump has made this assertion at least 20 times since taking office. Despite his insistence, there’s no evidence to back it up.
Factcheck.org previously determined Trump was confusing the 2013 event with another occasion. The former Michigan county GOP did, in fact, present Trump with a statuette of Abraham Lincoln, but not a “Man of the Year” award.
Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung later attempted to pivot the narrative, telling the Washington Post that Trump was given the “2013 Man of the Decade” honor, a title the campaign says was indeed awarded, but only in 2023.
