Mike Johnson Admits He Has ‘No Idea’ How to End Government Shutdown
House Speaker Mike Johnson made the blunt admission Thursday that he had “no idea” how to end the government shutdown as he railed against Democrats engaging in ‘political theater” while “real people suffer.”
On the 16th day of the shutdown, Johnson and the House Republican leadership held a press conference in the Rayburn Room of the U.S. Capitol as he admitted the deadlock remained absolute.
Johnson began: “Today marks another day of American families feeling the personal and economic strain of this reckless decision that our Democrat colleagues keep making. They want the United States government to remain closed. They seem not to care about the pain that it is causing. They have offered no plan. They have offered no strategy. They have offered no common-sense path forward for ending this situation.”
“So many of you have asked us, ‘How will it end?’ We have no idea,” he said, holding up his hands.
He continued: “It is up to the Democrats and they have to decide it. Judging by their outrageous behavior, the Democrats appear perfectly happy to keep the political theater going while real people suffer.”
Johnson went on to say that given the lack of movement, House Republicans “made the responsible decision” for members “to spend this week in their districts working for the people” and “helping” constituents “navigate the mess the Democrats have created.”
“That’s not some talking point. Not some strategic tactic. We made that decision out of urgent necessity,” he added.
Signing off, after citing the work of House Republicans across different states, Johnson said: “I don’t like being mad Mike. I want to be happy Mike. I want to be the happy warrior. But I am so upset about all this. God bless America.”
