Mollie Hemingway to Fox & Friends: Mueller Taking a ‘Very Stalinist Type Approach to Criminal Justice’

Federalist columnist and Fox News contributor Mollie Hemingway compared Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s investigation to Stalin’s approach to criminal justice Friday morning in light of Thursday’s bombshell Michael Cohen guilty plea for lying to Congress.

When asked by host Brian Kilmeade to comment on claims made by vocal Trump critic Rep. Adam Schiff that there is a need to look into Trump financial interests, Ms. Hemingway said that “if someone has evidence of something wrong, then they should bring that forward,” before adding “but, in this country, we don’t decide that someone is guilty and then go on a fishing expedition until they find something that they did.”

She claimed that “what was alleged was treasonous collusion and not just this guy is someone we don’t like so we are going to punish him and anyone who worked with him,” finishing by proclaiming that the Mueller investigation is following a “very Stalinist type approach to criminal justice.”

What Hemingway and her Fox & Friends conveniently neglected to include in their assessment here is that the Mueller investigation — initiated to probe Russian interference in the 2016 election, and the possibility that the Trump campaign cooperated with that interference in any way — is, as far as we know, appears to be taking very thorough approach that is consistent with Mueller’s very impressive and bipartisan reputation.

If the only crimes that he ends up uncovering are “process crimes” such as perjury, then Hemingway’s critique holds water. But it is FAR too early to make such a criticism. Trump’s reputation as a businessman is not what is being investigated, nor is there any indication Mueller solely looking to lay “perjury traps” for members of the Trump administration and campaign.

In the pantheon of conservative media figures that consistently and breathlessly defend President Trump, there may be no outlet more blindly loyal to the White House than Fox & Friends. So when Federalist columnist Hemingway (a pathological devotee of the “Never-Never Trump” position) appears on the top-rated Fox News morning show to lash out at Mueller’s probe, one should not be surprised by comparisons to Stalin, the murderous Russian dictator.
