Morning Joe Panel: Is ‘Bold,’ ‘Mavericky’ VP Possibility Paul Ryan Qualified For The Job?
The speculation surrounding Mitt Romney‘s potential VP pick continues unabated, with Wednesday’s Morning Joe panel and Politico’s Mike Allen wondering what a Paul Ryan pick might look like — despite, of course, continued “radio silence” from Romney’s camp on the matter.
The question of a Ryan pick, said Allen, points to a bigger question where Romney’s campaign is concerned: “Do you go bold or do what the Romney campaign so far seems to be trying to do, which is just run out the clock on Obama? Now, Ryan would be ‘going bold.'”
Allen adds that they hear that Ryan has really bonded with Romney on the campaign trail, but that selecting him as a running mate would be risky in that it’d give the Obama campaign a “double-edged blade” with his Medicare plan and ties to an exceedingly unpopular Congress.
Mark Halperin noted Ryan’s lack of experience, characterizing him as not ready to be president if the situation would call for it. Andrea Mitchell then argued Ryan is actually “perhaps the most qualified” among the rumored Romney picks when it comes to the economy.
Host Joe Scarborough agreed, giving a rather glowing account of Ryan’s work and confidence, but deciding that, ultimately, Romney won’t go with a “mavericky” pick and will likely choose Rob Portman, or perhaps Tim Pawlenty.
