Rep. Peter King Rages Over ‘Disgraceful’ FBI Investigation of Trump: ‘Almost Like a Coup’

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) appeared on Fox News Monday morning and, as many Republicans have done over the last several days, blasted an FBI investigation of President Donald Trump that was revealed last week.

The investigation, which was begun after the President fired then-FBI Director James Comey, was into the question of whether Trump was acting as an agent of or on behalf of Russia, and like many of his colleagues, King attacked it as an abuse of power, then took it even a step further than that.

“From what I’ve seen and heard, if this is true, what the FBI did is absolutely disgraceful,” said King. “They have been investigating the Trump campaign from the summer of 2016. Absolutely nothing, zero has come up involving President Trump. James Comey told that to the president. The reason President Trump fired Comey was Comey refused to say that publicly, that the president was not under investigation.”

“For the FBI to use that firing, that legitimate firing, as an excuse to launch an investigation of the President of the United States, as to whether or not he was a spy, that’s almost like a coup within the government,” he said. “I mean that is absolutely disgraceful.”

King called it an “indictment of the FBI leadership” and said it proves “what the president has been saying all along about the bias at the top of the FBI that was against him.”

“They were against President Trump and they were abusing police powers of the government to go after the duly elected president,” he said.

They played a clip of Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) from CNN on Sunday, and his statement that Trump has been secretive of meetings with Vladimir Putin because of the danger of leaks satisfied King, who said he completely agrees.

He also brought up former President Barack Obama‘s famous “after my election I have more flexibility,” comments to then Russian President (and current Prime Minister) Dmitry Medvedev.

King was slated to discuss the government shutdown, but the discussion of Trump and Russia continued instead, with King saying that Special Counsel Robert Mueller has gone “far afield” in his investigation.

“This started out about collusion. It’s gone all over the field to Michael Cohen’s taxicab medallions in New York. So this has gone everywhere, to porn stars and everything,” he said, to indicate that he believes Mueller should investigate the FBI’s investigation.

That’s when they moved on to the topic of the government shutdown.
