‘Ridiculous!’ MSNBC’s Claire McCaskill Throws a Tantrum Over NYT Fact Check of Biden
MSNBC’s Claire McCaskill, a former Democratic senator, threw a tantrum over the New York Times‘ recent fact check of President Joe Biden’s claims about the economy, calling it “ridiculous” on Morning Joe Thursday.
On Wednesday, the Times ran a story headlined “Fact-Checking Biden’s Recent Economic Talking Points,” arguing that he has made various assertions that are lacking context, misleading, and outright false.
In a segment on Morning Joe, McCaskill expressed indignation over the story without refuting any of its substance.
After arguing that people around the world are in disbelief that Donald Trump might retake the White House.
“The only blemish on the great country of America worldwide is, in fact, Donald Trump,” submitted McCaskill before launching into her tirade against the Times:
And can I make a suggestion? I move that every newspaper in America quits doing any fact checks on Joe Biden until they fact check Donald Trump every morning on the front page. It is ridiculous that the New York Times fact check Joe Biden on something. I mean, he vomits lies, Trump vomits lies. And he, every day over and over and over again. And it’s just ridiculous that the New York Times is doing a fact check on Biden while they let Trump- they’re numb to the torrent of lies coming out of Trump’s mouth.
Hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough followed up McCaskill by trying to qualify her comments.
“I have no problem with a fact check on this White House, but they need to do the same [for Trump],” insisted Brzezinski.
“But again, this is what fascists do,” argued Scarborough. “Fascists lie so much, and they always say it, you know, that Russia’s fire hose of falsehoods just like fascists. They lie so much that soon people get exhausted. And that’s where the exhaustion comes in.”
The Times‘ fact check and McCaskill’s reaction to it comes in the context of Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger’s acknowledgement that the White House has been “extremely upset” about over its coverage of Biden.
“We are just stating the truth fully and plainly, but we are also doing that in a way that is unemotional. We are not anyone’s opposition and we’re not anyone’s lap dog,” said Sulzberger.
