Sanjay Gupta Not Impressed with GOP Rep’s Plan to Ban Flights from West Africa

Representative Pete Sessions (R-TX) told CNN’s New Day Monday morning that the U.S. should ban travel from west Africa. CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta wasn’t having it, and things got a bit tense.

“If you ban airline flights, they’re gonna start leaving by land, they may be more difficult to contact, they may be more difficult treat,” Gupta said.

“The United States government then should have a plane for United States citizens, not 13,000 people with visas to want to come visit,” Sessions said. “My job is to speak for and help protect Americans. …So if American citizens need to come back, then we should find a way to get them back, or to house them in an area where they could be safe.”

“So those people can’t come to the United States,” Gupta said. “They then go to another country within Africa, maybe they get on a plane to New Delhi or Istanbul. Are you going to prevent anybody who’s even been in west Africa, who may have traveled to other countries around the world, not to come to the United States? With incubation period of twenty-one days, those people could be around the world, you realize?”

“As a matter of fact, I do realize that,” Sessions said. “I believe people should isolate these areas. It has grown the way it has because of people traveling.”
