Scarborough on Trump’s Twitter Restraint: Like Somebody Told Him He Admitted Obstructing Justice
In the past few days, the President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed has been pretty tame in comparison to the full-throated rants and potentially self-incriminating tweets of the weekend before last. This was noticed this morning on Morning Joe which host Joe Scarborough noticed as he led a panel discussing regarding Trump’s apparent social media discipline since he appeared to admit that he was aware that Michael Flynn had lied to the FBI.
The discussion arose after a thoughtful report from NBC News political reporter Carol Lee, who shared reports that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is focusing on a key 18 days surrounding Flynn’s admitted lying to the FBI and the time that he was dismissed, specifically focusing on who knew what within the White House within the context possible charges of obstruction of justice.
Over the past week, Trump’s tweets have been rather disciplined, which Scarborough suggested a plausible reason why saying:
At least the last week or two, it’s almost as if somebody did get to him and say you just admitted you obstructed justice. Now listen we’ve been telling you for a year to show some discipline when you speak and when you tweet. I want you to know that there’s nothing Bob Mueller could have ever unearthed more than that tweet that you gave, Mr. President. If you want to go to jail for the rest of your life, you can tweet whatever you want. If you want us to have any chance of helping you beat obstruction of justice charges, you may want to calm down.
When the panel discussion turned to Trump’s recent attacks on the press, there was agreement that, oddly, attacking the media is more on message, or as John Heilemann noted, “those attacks on the media are politically safe and they’re legally safe.”
This is the way we live now.
