Sean Hannity Slams GOP Tax Hike Plan for the Rich as Plain ‘Bad’: ‘Against Everything Trump Has Ever Believed In’
Fox News host Sean Hannity turned his fire on Republicans, warning conservatives that raising taxes on America’s wealthiest was “bad” and “against everything” President Donald Trump was elected on.
A new Bloomberg report on Wednesday revealed that Republicans in the White House and on Capitol Hill are eyeing a proposal to raise the top income tax rate from 37% to 40% for Americans earning over $1 million annually.
That didn’t sit well with Hannity, a fervent defender of Trump’s economic record and bashing high taxes. The Fox host, whose salary reportedly sits around $45 million, sounded off on his radio show, calling the proposal “bad for the economy” and fundamentally at odds with Trumpism.
Speaking to economist Steve Moore, who called in during Wednesday’s episode of The Sean Hannity Show, the host said: “I just think it’s bad for the economy. On the other hand, it seems to go against everything Donald Trump has ever believed in. I mean, I think he’s always understood this. And I’ve been reading the same things you’ve been reading, and frankly, I just haven’t been believing it.”
“Well, I don’t think it’s going to happen, but it’s a threat,” Moore replied.
The economist continued: “And we’ve got, you know, my old friend Bob Novak, you remember Bob Novak from Evans and Novak, he used to say the only reason God put Republicans on the earth is to cut our taxes. And if they’re raising them, I think it’s going to split our party. I think Republicans will lose the midterm elections. Don’t go there. You remember what happened in 1992. Remember when [former President George [H.W.] Bush raised taxes? We lost everything.”
“Pretty unbelievable to be honest,” Hannity said.
The host went to warn that the move was contrary to the “president’s promises” to all voters: “I mean, what Republicans would go forward with a tax increase when they should be making the Trump tax cuts permanent, eliminating tax on tips, Social Security and overtime, because that’s what the president promised. Why would they go in any other direction?”
But for now, GOP leadership isn’t rushing to shut down stories of the rumored plans. Hannity, however, is not a lone voice in criticizing the move.
