Sen. Bob Corker Blasts Trump Over Summit: Putin’s ‘Having Caviar Right Now’

Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) ripped into Donald Trump on Monday, suggesting the president totally capitulated to Vladimir Putin during their joint press conference in Helsinki.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman spoke to reporters today who asked for his thoughts on the summit where Trump sided with Putin over U.S. intelligence conclusions that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections. Trump also said America shared blame with Russia in regards to how badly diplomatic ties have gotten between the two.

“I felt like the President’s comments made us look as a nation more like a pushover,” Corker said in reaction. “I did not think that this was a good moment for our country.”

Corker continued that it was “deeply disappointing” to see Trump speak against his own intelligence findings, saying “for him not to defend their activities to me is very sad.” He also opined that Putin “gained a tremendous amount” from the summit, and he scolded Trump for caring more how world leaders “treat him personally” than doing something to challenge Putin for his meddling in American institutions.

“It was almost a public approval from the greatest country on Earth,” Corker said. “[Putin] knows he’s gained a lot, I would guess he’s having caviar right now.”
