Texas Lt. Gov. Declares, ‘We’re a Red State, We Deserve More Representation’
Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick (R) argued that his state should move forward with its plan to radically gerrymander congressional districts there because, as a red state, “We deserve more representation.”
The Lone Star State’s Republican-controlled legislature is attempting to enact a rare mid-decade redistricting plan ahead of the 2026 midterms to boost the GOP’s odds of maintaining control of the U.S. House of Representatives. It would hinge on creating five districts more favorable to Republicans. In response, several Texas Democratic lawmakers have fled to Illinois to deprive the legislature of a quorum.
On Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) ordered the arrest of the absentee lawmakers.
Appearing on Tuesday’s Hannity on Fox News, Patrick vowed that Republicans will ultimately enact their redistricting plan. At one point, Patrick said red states deserve “more representation”:
We’re gonna move it forward and, working with the speaker, whether it’s this month, our special session is 30 days and ends in two weeks and we’re halfway through. We’re either gonna do it now, we’re gonna do it in later August, we’re gonna do it in September, we’re gonna do it in October.
Whatever it takes, Sean, whatever it takes, we’re going to get it done. There’s nothing they can do to stop us. And I challenge them. Come back and do the right thing. Don’t run and hide because you’ve lost touch with the voters. Their problem… is they’ve lost the minds of their voters, who are moving towards the Republican Party all over the country. We are a red state, we deserve more representation.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has threatened to implement a more Democrat-friendly redistricting map if Texas Republicans succeed.
