Trump Advisor Insists Multiple Times on CNN Second Debate ‘On the Books’ — Minutes Before Trump Casts Doubt on Actually Going
A senior advisor for former President Donald Trump told CNN multiple times that Trump is committed to a second debate on September 25 only minutes before Trump cast doubt about whether there’d be another debate with Vice President Kamala Harris at all.
Following Tuesday night’s debate on ABC News, Harris’s campaign challenged Trump to a second debate in October.
“Vice President Harris is ready for a second debate. Is Donald Trump?” the campaign said.
Trump senior advisor Jason Miller joined CNN This Morning on Wednesday and told Kasie Hunt multiple times that the Trump campaign has already accepted an invitation to participate in a September 25 debate on NBC News.
“I thought this was a bit perplexing because President Trump has already said he’s going to three debates,” Miller said about Harris’s challenge.
One of the three “debates” Miller is referencing is an earlier date in September, which would have aired on Fox News. The Harris campaign did not agree to this proposed debate. Miller called Harris a “no show” and said she’s pushing a “fictional date” now.
Hunt pressed Miller multiple times on the subject as Miller would not directly say Trump would attend the debate if Harris agrees to it, but instead echoed repeatedly that it is “on the books.”
“Again, you heard what I said. President Trump agreed to three debates. September 4 on Fox, which Kamala Harris has already no-showed, so she’s 0 for 1. You had last night’s debate. President Trump said in a press conference and the via social media that on September 25, we would do it on NBC. You can’t give Kamala Harris credit for saying she’ll do some fictional debate a month, month and a half, two months down the road, maybe on election eve. Kamala Harris is not going to show up,” he said.
Hunt asked for a final time if the campaign planned to “stand by” their commitment following Tuesday night.
“Kamala Harris last night refused to say that she is going to join us so you can’t give her credit, again, for some fictional date. We’re already on the books. September 25. Call NBC right now,” Miller said.
Miller’s comments came at approximately 6:36 a.m. Trump meanwhile gave an interview the same morning to Fox & Friends and just before 7:00 a.m., he cast doubt on him attending a second debate.
“I’d be less inclined to because we had a great night. We won the debate. We had a terrible, terrible network. I think they were terrible. They should be embarrassed,” Trump said, adding, “I think we let it settle in and let’s see what happens.”
