Trump Gripes That Gazans Didn’t ‘Say Thank You’ for Food Aid: ‘Would Be Nice to Have at Least a Thank You’
President Donald Trump complained on Sunday that Gazans have not thanked him for some food assistance to the country.
Gazans are facing famine, and some have begun starving to death as Israel has greatly restricted the flow of aid into the country. Babies in particular are facing starvation due to a severe shortage of baby formula. Food is limited in much of Gaza, and aid distribution centers have been sites of mass slaughter in recent weeks. Israeli forces have killed more than 1,000 people seeking food at distribution sites, according to the U.N. Gaza health officials say more than 55,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war.
Israeli officials have said they will allow limited airdrops of aid into Gaza.
Across both the Biden and Trump administrations, the U.S. has provided Israel with weapons and diplomatic support as the Middle Eastern nation continues its invasion of Gaza after the Oct. 7 attacks. Trump has gone so far as to advocate the removal of all Palestinians from Gaza and last week told Israel to “finish the job.”
Speaking to reporters in Scotland on Sunday, Trump was asked if Israel should allow more aid to Gaza. The president didn’t answer the question, and instead complained that Gazans had not shown proper gratitude:
Well, you know, we gave $60 million two weeks ago, and nobody even acknowledged it, for food. And it’s terrible. You know, you really at least wanna have somebody say, “Thank you.” No other country gave anything. We gave $60 million two weeks ago for food for Gaza. And nobody acknowledged it. Nobody talks about it, and it makes you feel a little bad when you do that. And you know you have other countries not giving anything. None of the European countries, by the way, gave I mean, nobody gave but us. And nobody said, “Gee, thank you very much.” And it would be nice to have at least a thank you.
Trump’s claim that the U.S. is the only country to give aid to Gaza is false.
The president then went on a digression about the bodies of hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza.
