Trump on Taiwan Call: ‘Why Should Some Other Nation Be Able to Say I Can’t Take a Call?’

After President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, it became a massive controversy, given the potential response from China. But Trump himself told Chris Wallace today that he didn’t believe it to be a big deal.

The president-elect said, “I fully understand the One China policy, but I don’t know why we have to be bound by One China policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade.”

He said it was just a short congratulatory call and that he doesn’t “want China dictating to me.”

“Why should some other nation,” he concluded, “be able to say I can’t take a call?” Trump said that would have been disrespectful.
