WHCA President on Blowback to Michelle Wolf Jokes: ‘I Don’t Think the Comedian Speaks for the Press Corps’
White House Correspondents Association President Margaret Talev appeared on CNN this morning and addressed some of the negative feedback to Michelle Wolf for her WHCD speech and to the WHCA for inviting her.
Wolf has been criticized in particular for her jabs at Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Brian Stelter ran that snippet from her monologue this morning.
Talev said she told Huckabee Sanders last night she “appreciated her being there,” adding to Stelter, “Michelle Wolf is a comedian, she speaks for herself, and that is her right to do that.”
She said her only regret is that the coverage of Wolf’s jokes is overshadowing the rest of the event and the “cause of unity.”
Stelter asked if inviting Wolf symbolizes an “endorsement.” Talev responded, “I think the comedian reflects on the press corps, but I don’t think that the comedian speaks for the press corps. The press corps speaks for itself… In my message last night, I sought to explain to everyone that journalists are Americans from all walks of life.”
