‘Who Writes That?!’ David Axelrod Bewildered by Trump Speech’s Strange Lines About Women

CNN commentator David Axelrod appeared mystified by remarks given by former President Donald Trump in his campaign speeches.

Speaking in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Wednesday night, Trump told the crowd his campaign staff has repeatedly asked him not to speak about “protecting” women in paternalistic terms.

“And I said, ‘Well, I’m going to do it whether the women like it or not. I’ve gotta protect them. I’m gonna protect them from migrants coming in. I’m gonna protect them from foreign countries that wanna hit us with missiles and lots of other things,'” Trump said.

During a panel discussion on Thursday’s AC360 on CNN, Gretchen Carlson responded by noting Trump is responsible for the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

“Number two, more than a dozen women have accused him of sexually assaulting them in some way,” she continued. “I’m sure they did not want that to happen. Number three, he said that because he was a powerful man, he could grab women by the pussy – excuse my French – and that they probably wouldn’t care. And number four, he was [found liable] of sexual assault of E. Jean Carroll and is going to owe her millions of dollars.”

Host Anderson Cooper noted that Trump’s comments about “protecting” women are often accompanied by odd statements. At a rally last month, Trump made what some pundits called “creepy” statements.

Cooper noted, “He’s kind of like, ‘Women will be happy. They will be healthy. They will be free. They will no longer have to think about abortion.'”

“He read that off a prompter, too,” Axelrod pointed out. “Who writes that?!”

The former Obama White House alumnus said Trump is making such remarks at a time when Vice President Kamala Harris is reviving Trump’s claim in 2015 that women who received abortions should get “some form of punishment.”

“Aside from the sort of the juxtaposition of how he behaves and what he says, there is this patronizing tone to him now,” Axelrod added. “Back then, [it] was like, shocking. But it seemed impossible. But now, what we’ve seen in the country, it
suggests that he’s followed through on his belief about that.”
