‘You Grabbing Me?’ Cop Accosts CNN Crew
CNN senior investigative reporter Kyung Lah was accosted by a police officer who accused her of grabbing him on Tuesday during her coverage of the ongoing Los Angeles protests.
“What you’re seeing here are the advancing LAPD. These are officers who have been called to clear this street,” reported Lah on The Lead as a barricade of officers could be seen approaching. “There’s been a dispersal order issued. They’re trying to clear the street.”
Lah then added, “Okay, we’re being asked to go behind the police,” as the CNN team moved towards the officers.
“Press. Press. He’s press, he’s with me. He’s with me. He’s with me,” Lah could be heard telling the officers, while another CNN staffer said, “Sir, I’m with CNN. I have my verification. I have my verification right here.”
An officer then declared, “He doesn’t come through. You do.”
As a group of police officers then swarmed Lah, she pushed through an opening to get out.
“Are you grabbing me?!” the officer proceeded to shout at Lah.
“No! I didn’t touch you!” she protested, as the officer yelled, “Get away from me!”
Another police officer then told the CNN crew, “We need you guys to go over there. Come on.”
“See Jake, it’s a little chaotic,” Lah told CNN host Jake Tapper, who was watching from the studio.
Several journalists have been injured by police since the riots erupted last week.
Lauren Tomasi, a journalist for Australia’s Nine News, was shot in the leg with a rubber bullet while reporting on the riots – angering Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who described the incident as “horrific” and unacceptable in a statement to the National Press Club.
New York Post photojournalist Toby Canham was shot in the head with a rubber bullet, leaving him with whiplash and a severe bruise above his face, while CBS Los Angeles correspondent Lauren Pozen was left coughing and gasping for air after officers used tear gas to disperse rioters.
