CNN’s Kaitlan Collins Asks Ex-Trump Attorney Flat-Out ‘Did You Resign? Or Were You Fired?’

CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins bluntly and repeatedly asked former Trump attorney Jim Trusty “Did you resign? Or Were you fired?”

Trusty represented Trump in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into classified documents under the Espionage Act — until shortly after former President Donald Trump announced his own indictment.

Trusty was a guest on Thursday night’s edition of CNN’s The Source with Kaitlan Collins to discuss new CNN reporting on the potential witness list at the Espionage Act trial, but at one point Collins tried to clear up a mystery.

It was Trump who announced the departure of Trusty and John Rowley, each of whom then released a statement announcing they’d submitted their resignations. But the question of whose idea those resignations were remains open. Trusty’s evasive answer could be a clue:

COLLINS: OK. Jim. Let me ask you?

TRUSTY: — outside, of a year, so.

COLLINS: Because obviously, the last time our viewers saw you, was when you were still, on the Trump legal team. You no longer are.

Can you just explain why you resigned, from the Trump legal team, the day after he was indicted, in the documents case?

TRUSTY: Sure can’t. No, I mean, look, and I certainly didn’t suggest to CNN, that I was willing to talk about that.

The bottom line is, I have a responsibility.

COLLINS: We have to ask.

TRUSTY: No, I don’t — I’m not faulting you for asking. It’s fine. I’m just telling you, I’m not a kiss-and-tell guy. So, I’m not going to get into anything. It was the right time, for myself to leave, for John Rowley to leave. Tim Parlatore left a little bit before that.

COLLINS: Can you just say did you all —

TRUSTY: And so.

COLLINS: Did you resign? Or were you fired?

TRUSTY: It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter. I’m not here to like, try to elevate myself, or disparage my former client. The bottom line is, there was a logical break point. I took that break point. And I don’t kiss-and-tell.
