‘The Race Has Been Completely Reshaped!’ Steve Kornacki Presents Shocking NBC Poll Showing Harris Surging to a 5 Point Lead Over Trump

“The race has been completely reshaped!” Steve Kornacki said Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press — while presenting the network’s new poll.

Indeed, the new poll shows a contest that is breaking very much in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris. The Democratic nominee leads former President Donald Trump by 5 points in the new poll — 49-44. That’s a 7-point swing from the network’s poll in July — when President Joe Biden was still in the race. Trump led the NBC poll 45-43 just before Biden’s withdrawal.

Kornacki seemed to attribute the vice president’s gains to a dramatic increase in popularity. Just 32 percent of voters told NBC their views of Harris were positive, back in July. But the new survey found the vice president’s popularity skyrocketed to 48 percent in the new survey — a gain Kornacki framed as historic.

“This is the largest increase that we have seen for any politician since George W. Bush in the wake of the September 11th attacks on this issue,” Kornacki said.

The NBC News analyst, though, did argue there was a silver lining for Trump in the new numbers:

“A lot of positive news here for Democrats and for Kamala Harris. But if you’re a Republican looking at these numbers, look back to October 2020. Very similar. We say Harris has jumped into a 3-point net positive rating. That’s where Joe Biden was in October 2020. Trump is pretty much in the same place, a little bit worse in terms of views of him as 2020.

“But here’s the other difference. In 2020, Trump was the incumbent president. Sixty percent of people thought the country was on the wrong track. Now, Harris is part of an incumbent administration, and two-thirds say the country is on the wrong track.

“In 2020, Trump came within really a handful of votes in a few states of winning in that in the Electoral College. As the challenger against the incumbent administration, maybe overall, not that much of a different set up here. Certainly in the Electoral College within reach for him.”
