Former President Donald Trump leads Florida Governor Ron DeSantis by several country miles in a new poll of the 2024 Republican presidential race — but…

Trump and DeSantis have been locked in something of a one-way feud recently, with Trump attacking DeSantis as “gutless” and privately fuming at his rival’s lack of deference, and DeSantis just trying to avoid eye contact, metaphorically speaking.

That dynamic might be informed by the fact that DeSantis has emerged as a focal point for anti-Trump Republicans like former Amb. John Bolton, who has been putting out polls meant to discourage Trump from running in 2024 and pump up DeSantis.

A new poll from McLaughlin & Associates, however, shows Trump with a commanding lead over DeSantis. At 53 percent for Trump to 13 percent for DeSantis, Trump more than quadruples his rival’s support.

From the Grain of Salt Depatment: The survey comes from pollsters who were on the Trump campaign’s polling team in 2020, who run a polling company that carries a “C/D” rating from FiveThirtyEight.

The McLaughlin poll does roughly mirror the level of support shown for Trump in other polls, but understates DeSantis’ poll by about half compared to one recent poll, but is about the same as in another.

And it’s not all great news for Trump. Republican primary voters in the poll were asked “Do you want to see Donald Trump run for President again in 2024?”

A sizable 21 percent responded “no,” which roughly mirrors other polls that have asked the same question.

And it’s not all bad news for DeSantis, who has solidified his grip on the non-Trump field in the McLaughlin poll. In a Trump-less primary, DeSantis leads with 26 percent, with Donald Trump Jr. in second at 18 percent.

In another recent poll from UMass Amherst conducted by YouGov, Trump led DeSantis 55% to 20%, but DeSantis receive support from 69 percent of Republicans who listed him as either their first (20%), second (37%) or third (12%) choice.

But Trump appears to be the one to beat in the 2024 GOP primary… for now.
