WaPo Columnist Rips Dems Over Jamaal Bowman’s Tirade Against AIPAC: They’ve ‘Allowed Anti-Semitism to Fester’
Conservative Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen argued Democrats have “allowed anti-semitism to fester in their ranks” in reaction to Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s (D-NY) tirade against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) during a Get Out The Vote rally on Saturday.
At the rally, where he was later endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT), Bowman told attendees: “We are gonna show f*cking AIPAC the power of the motherf*cking South Bronx!”
He added: “We are not gonna stay silent while the U.S. tax dollar kills babies and women and children.”
Speaking to Fox News anchor Gillian Turner on Monday, Thiessen — who worked as a speechwriter for former President George W. Bush — claimed that there was a “connection” between the Democrats’ tolerance of Bowman’s rhetoric and violent clashes involving pro-Palestine demonstrators outside a synagogue in Los Angeles on Saturday.
He went on to accuse the congressional Democrats of a form of selective “outrage”, comparing silence on Bowman’s remarks with anger at former Republican lawmaker Steve King who was stripped of his committee seats in rebuke for inflammatory comments about white supremacy.
During Monday’s segment, the host said: “There are plenty of Jews in Washington in his district in New York who are critical of AIPAC but this is something else. I don’t know what this is.”
Thiessen replied: “Well, also, can you imagine if a sitting congressman stood up at a rally and said: ‘We are going to show the f’ing NAACP the power of this district what theo outrage would be? And this is the problem, is that the Democratic party has not policed its movement and allowed anti-semitism to fester in the halls of congress. It is Jamal bowman, it’s the rest of The Squad.”
He continued: “You know, If somebody had done what he did and targeted black people, they would be kicked off their committees and shunned by the Democratic caucus. When Representative Steve King said back in 2019 said ‘I don’t understand what’s the problem with white supremacy’ and all the rest of it he was kicked off all committees by the Republicans in congress. Why haven’t the Democratic leadership in congress done the same to Jamaal Bowman for this. Why haven’t they done that with Ilhan Omar? Why haven’t they done that with the rest of the squad?”
Thiessen added: “They tolerate anti-semitism in their ranks and then they are
surprised when an anti-semitic mob surrounds a synagogue in Los Angeles and beats Jews. There is a connection between these two things.”
Agreeing, the host replied: “There absolutely is. Marc, have to leave it there. Thank you.”
