WATCH: Terrifying Video Shows Sparks From Cargo Plane Lighting Up Miami’s Night Sky
Terrifying video out of Miami showed sparks flying from a cargo plane as bystanders could be heard exclaiming, “It’s on fire!”
CNN reported that the engine malfunctioned about three minutes into the Atlas Air flight Thursday night from Miami to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Flight 5Y095 departed at 10:11 p.m. and was in the air for less than an hour, before returning to the airport and landing safely, according to Fox News Digital.
“The aircraft involved was a Boeing 747-8, Flightaware data showed. It never climbed above 3,800 ft. during the abruptly ended flight,” Fox News Digital reported. Boeing “deferred comment to Atlas Air.”
Reuters reported:
The pilot made a Mayday call around 0333 GMT to report an engine fire and requested to return back to the airport, according to multi-channel recordings of conversations between the air traffic control and the plane available on liveatc.net.
“We have a engine fire,” one of the plane crew said, disclosing that there were five people on board.
The crew member said the incident involved engine number two and it occurred “on the climb out” of the airport.
“We’re told all the crew — the crew followed all standard safety procedures and landed at Miami International Airport,” said CNN’s John Berman. “Atlas Air planned to conduct an inspection to figure out what caused all this.”
No injuries were reported.
“That’s a wild video,” exclaimed Kate Bolduan. “Thank God.”
Reuters reported that the malfunction followed two “high-profile jetliner accidents this year.”
They included:
An Airbus A350 passenger plane operated by Japan Airlines collided with a Coast Guard aircraft in Tokyo, killing five crew members on Jan. 2.
A few days later, a Boeing 737 MAX 9 jet made an emergency landing following a cabin panel blowout, which prompted the FAA to temporarily grounded 171 jets for safety checks.
