‘Why Biden Cut Off Trump’s Briefings’: Maggie Haberman Reacts to Report Trump Shared Nuclear Secrets With Foreign Billionaire
Former President Donald Trump reportedly shared sensitive information about U.S. nuclear submarines with an Australian billionaire (no, not that one), who in turn relayed the information to dozens of people.
On Thursday, ABC News reported that Trump told paper and packaging magnate Anthony Pratt “the supposed exact number of nuclear warheads they routinely carry, and exactly how close they supposedly can get to a Russian submarine without being detected.”
Pratt is a member of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, where the former president stored boxes of government documents after he left office. Trump is currently under federal indictment for what the government says was his willful retention of classified materials and his attempt to obstruct the government’s efforts to retrieve them.
Maggie Haberman of the New York Times and CNN appeared on AC360 hours later to confirm ABC’s reporting.
“It doesn’t appear he showed a document to this gentleman,” she said. “But I don’t know for prosecutors that that matters because our understanding is he is among the trial witnesses who prosecutors have listed as possible people they will call. And what they would likely use him for is to establish a pattern of Trump being cavalier with sensitive information and the government’s secrets.”
Haberman went on to say that Pratt might be called as a witness at Trump’s trial before pointing to the former president’s history of playing loose with government secrets.
“There was an infamous Oval Office meeting with two Russian officials where he is said to have spilled some sensitive information that upset Israeli officials,” she added. “He tweeted out a classified picture of an Iranian launch site, I think it was in 2019. This is something he has done for a while. This is the kind of behavior that added to why President Biden cut off Trump’s briefings that ex-presidents get to sensitive information and classified briefings, because according to the current president, you know, what could happen other than that Trump would slip up and say something?”
