And The Beat Goes On: New York Times Journos Reportedly Arrested In Egypt

Attacks and censorship against journalist continues in Cairo: This time, two journalists from The New York Times have reportedly been arrested in Egypt while performing their coverage of the ongoing protests.

This morning, Associated Press Middle East correspondent Hadeel Al-Shalchi Tweeted about the arrest. He later added that the country’s military had taken the two into “protective custody.”

Earlier in the day, Al-Shalchi had warned his Twitter followers that there were orders for the arrest of journalists visiting Egypt.

This is just the latest in a string of arrests and intimidation against those attempting to cover the crisis in Egypt. You might recall that, previously, journalists working for Al-Jazeera English had been arrested for a brief period of time following a raid of the hotel from which they were working. Their equipment was also confiscated. A CNN reporter also had to deal with having his equipment taken after a physical altercation. Then, of course, there are other recent examples of foreign journalists facing violence and intimidation from officials and locals alike while attempting to cover the event unfolding in Cairo.
