Andrea Mitchell: ‘Never Been As Discouraged as I Have Been This Week About Our Country’

We’ve been seeing more and more of Andrea Mitchell on Morning Joe lately — and frankly we’re fans.

The host, who is typically buried in her midday program, Andrea Mitchell Reports, was on MJ Friday to offer her thoughts on what may have been Trump’s worst week as president.

Though she said she was an optimist, she certainly didn’t sound like one, telling Mika and Joe that she had never been as discouraged as she was now about the future of the United States.

Scarborough set her up.

“What is it, four days since the press conference? I think we need to count it out,” he said. “Andrea Mitchell, I want to bring you in for sort of a sense of perspective. There is a lot to be discouraged about … with what you’ve seen in Washington through the years, is the center holding?”

Mitchell offered her response. It was eloquent but here was the nut:

“I have never been as discouraged as I have been this week about our country”

I’m an optimist. I have never been as discouraged as I have been this week about our country. Not the people of our country but the leaders of our country. There is a central corruption of the spirit at the core of all of this, and people have overlooked a lot of the financial self-dealing and a lot of the other thing along the way, but when you keep making excuses, you get to the center of it, and all I see is self love. and that is not leadership. I don’t know where — I don’t know where we go here. I do think that you have senators Tim Scott, others, Ted Cruz, who could have thought Ted Cruz would be more compassionate and loving and show more character this week than the president of the United States? It’s just totally confounding. I’m waiting to see what House leaders do, but someone has to go, and thinking back, someone has to be the Hugh Scott and Barry Goldwater who go to the White House and say this cannot continue. You have got to get this into shape. I don’t know when that happens or who those people are and whether he’ll listen.
