As Expected, John Boehner Wins Reelection as House Speaker

Despite some loud conservative opposition, House Speaker John Boehner won reelection to his speakership position at the start of the 114th Congress.

Boehner was comfortably reelected with 216 votes in his favor, and only a few dozen against.

There were some challenges to his leadership over the past few days. Texas’ Louie Gohmert offered himself up as an alternative And while having a fair amount of Tea Party support, he didn’t exactly have that big a shot of winning (in spite of an endorsement from Sarah Palin). Florida’s Ted Yoho jumped into the ring too, and fellow Floridian Daniel Webster made a last-minute bid for Speaker too.
