Aurora, Colorado Suspect Identified As James Holmes
Several media outlets, including ABC News, have named the suspected gunman in the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting as 24-year-old James Holmes of North Aurora.
Holmes was described as wearing what appeared to be a bullet-proof vest and a riot mask as he fired a canister into a theater during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises, filling it with thick smoke. He is believed to have had at least three weapons, including a rifle. CBSNews.com reports that police recovered a total of four guns at the scene — “one shotgun, two pistols and what is believed to be an assault rifle” — in addition to a gas mask.
Police searched Holmes’ car and his apartment following a statement he gave about having explosives. He remains in police custody. No motivation has been determined. CNN reports this morning that “items of interest” have been removed from his apartment.
The shooting has left 12 people dead and several dozen others injured.
