David Clarke Has Resigned as Milwaukee County Sheriff

The Milwaukee County Clerk has confirmed that David Clarke has resigned as Sheriff of Milwaukee County. According to Milwaukee news station TMJ-4, no word had been given as to the reason Clarke decided to suddenly resign this afternoon.

Reporter Steve Chamraz revealed the news on Twitter:

Later, CNN’s Laura Jarrett provided a copy of Clarke’s resignation letter:

Back in May, the controversial sheriff publicly announced that he had accepted a position with the Department of Homeland Security. However, DHS wouldn’t confirm if he had been formally given the position. Following a plagiarism scandal, Clarke took his name out of consideration for the job in June.

While there isn’t any immediate news as to what Clarke will be doing now that he’s resigned, the now former sheriff got a presidential book plug earlier this week:

And it should be noted that DHS does need a new head following John Kelly moving over to White House Chief of Staff. However, one official at DHS said Clarke is not coming there:

It may be that Clarke was just quitting on his own terms rather than face a certain election defeat, especially in the wake of revelations that a prisoner died of thirst in his jail and that he used his deputies to harass an airline passenger who shook his head at him.
