Center for Effective Government Gives State Dept an ‘F’ on Disclosure

Amid the controversy over the State Department and Hillary Clinton‘s use of personal email, a new report from the Center for Effective Government gives the State Department its lowest rating in an evaluation of how each federal agency handles public records requests.

The report [PDF] examines how 15 federal agencies responded to Freedom of Information Act requests, the clarity of their rules on such requests, the quality of each agency’s FOIA site, and the speed with which they respond.

Eight of these agencies improved their score from the previous year’s report. For example, the Department of Agriculture got a B (85%) and the Social Security Administration got a B- (82%). But all the way at the bottom of the list, getting a big fat F (37%) is the State Department.
