China Finally Ends One-Child Policy After 35 Years

shutterstock_261993425Chinese state media announced Thursday that the government would be relaxing the longstanding one-child policy, allowing couples to have two children instead.

State media explains that the reason for the switch is because of China’s impending ‘demographic time bomb.’ After artificially keeping birthrates low, China’s population is becoming increasingly older with decreasing amount of young people to support the elderly.

China has long resorted to barbaric measures in order to force compliance with its population controls, including forced sterilizations and forced abortions. In addition, the policy has created a massive gender imbalance within the nation, as couples abort or murder female children to try again for a son.

The policy shift comes after a similar one in 2013, in which the government allowed couples to have another child if one of the parents was an only child.
