Colbert to Seinfeld: ‘I Was Ready to Stop’ Colbert Report With or Without Late Show

This week is Stephen Colbert’s turn to be Jerry Seinfeld’s guest on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. The thick gray beard on the late night host reveals that the pair taped the web series episode a few months back, before Colbert’s Late Show preparation was fully underway.
At one point during their conversation, Seinfeld called Colbert “one of the greatest television performers” he has even seen, with an emphasis on television. “What you did with that character,” he said of The Colbert Report host, “and the energy and the fun, you never seemed tired.”
“I was ready to stop,” Colbert revealed. “Oh yeah, I was going to stop whether or not — the Letterman thing fell in my lap.”
“Why’d you stop your show?” Colbert asked of Seinfeld. “Your show was a very good show, Jerry. You were one of the greatest performers I’ve ever seen on television — on NBC. One of the greatest performers I’ve ever seen on NBC.”
As of today, Colbert has a little more than eight weeks to figure out who he is without his Colbert Report character.
