Conspiracy Theory Suggests Starbucks Misspells Everyone’s Name For Marketing Purposes

starbucks-e1481745137139When you go to Starbucks, the barista misspells your name. That’s just how the whole “going to Starbucks thing” works at this point. If it hasn’t happened to you, it’s happened to what feels like all of the people who appear in your Facebook and Instagram feeds, and these days it almost feels like a rite of passage to post a photo of your name, totally butchered, by a Starbucks employee.

Super Deluxe, a YouTube channel hypothesized: What if Starbucks is doing all of this on purpose? They decided to investigate the matter by sending one of their employees, Molly, to five different locations. They spelled it “Molly,” “Molli,” “Molly” again, “Mali,” and the most egregious, “Mommy.”

Super Deluxe came up with the idea that this might all be a marketing ploy by Starbucks. They misspell your name, you post a photo of the misspelling on your social media, and then your friends want to go to Starbucks. With just a Sharpie and a bit of creativity, the company gets free advertising.

Could be true…
