D.L. Hughley Ripped Apart For Insensitive Tweet About Debbie Reynolds’ Death
Last night, just one day after the death of her daughter Carrie Fisher, actress Debbie Reynolds died. As with Fisher’s death, there was an outpouring of support and sadness on social media.
Then, as our friends at Gossip Cop noted, there was this tweet from D.L. Hughley:
Debbie Reynolds died a day after her daughter did! Black Mama’s don’t die cuz they kids do!They cry and say God don’t make no mistakes!
— DL Hughley (@RealDLHughley) December 29, 2016
The regular MSNBC and Fox News guest observed, for whatever reason, that a parent of color wouldn’t die if their child died. His followers were not impressed.
They tore into him for being insensitive toward Reynolds and Fisher as well as being too demanding of black women and too dismissive of their pain.

@ErickFernandez I’m sick of this strong black woman trope. We suffer great pain over a loss, too.

How to trivialize 2 deaths & the loss of all the black mothers AND race bait – Step 1: be D. L. Hughley https://t.co/y3Ca0oM833
— Kseniya D. Melnikova (@Stellar_Melk) December 29, 2016
This is a perfect example of inserting race where it is inappropriate to do so.A family lost two people in two days, and THAT’S what you say?
— Cheddar Baè Biscuit (@T_dot_Lee_PhD) December 29, 2016
@kzanlz Ah! I took it as him saying black women are “stronger” or whatever. But either way, completely gross, stupid, and inappropriate!

And this is why you are performing for audiences at the corner liquor store instead of big arenas and theaters https://t.co/jlAhWISXnt

@RealDLHughley you think it’s a good thing for blk mothers to bottle their pain and pretend it’s a good thing God let their kids die?

…and notably did not delete his tweet like fellow comedian Steve Martin did when his tribute to Fisher was deemed insensitive.
If he ends up apologizing or deleting the tweet, we’ll let you know.
