Daily Caller Takes Down ‘Chutzpah’ Video After Twitter Calls It Anti-Semitic: ‘WTF?!’
The New York Times‘ Maggie Haberman tweeted it out and everyone else started scratching their heads: what the hell is this new video from The Daily Caller supposed to be?
Am I seeing this correctly and the Daily Caller made a vid of Thrush saying "chutzpah" w hava nagila playing? https://t.co/myW0bwnNVc
— Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) September 28, 2017
In the video (now deleted), Glenn Thrush is shown saying the word “chutzpah” during a TV appearance. And “Hava Nagila” plays. And the clip of him saying just the word “chutzpah” gets looped a few times as “Hava Nagila” continues to play.
And the YouTube caption read, “Watch Glenn Thrush demonstrate his intellectual and linguistic superiority.”
…what?
The Daily Caller seemed at first like they were going to stand by it:
What @betsyscribeindc wants, Betsy Rothstein gets https://t.co/DezZBj2pDN
— The Daily Caller (@DailyCaller) September 28, 2017
But now the video has been taken down, as well as Betsy Rothstein‘s post on it.
And, of course, the video’s been getting trashed a lot on Twitter:
The caption is all dogwhistles too in case there was any problem for the audience

WTF?!?!?!! Also, accepted spelling is Chutzpah https://t.co/6rXEOTGEXm

Why bother with anti-Semitic dog whistles when you can go with a foghorn? https://t.co/5pVp8WvA9z

— John Podhoretz (@jpodhoretz) September 28, 2017
UPDATE –– 7:40 pm ET: The CEO of the Anti-Defamation League also slammed it too:
Calling out @dailycaller for this anti-Semitic video/attack on a Jewish journalist. Take it down. Apologize to @glennthrush https://t.co/9nnltm1NFQ
— Jonathan Greenblatt (@JGreenblattADL) September 28, 2017
Rothstein took to Twitter to explain:
Ok Journo Twitter….here we go. I am going to explain how the @GlennThrush "Chutzpah!" video was born. Are you all ready? @DailyCaller
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
I am going to direct this to NYT's @GlennThrush since this was about him.
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
Last night, I was watching @Lawrence O'Donnell's show on MSNBC. I was excited to watch @GlennThrush since he hasn't been on Twitter.
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
Was curious to see if @GlennThrush looked more relaxed since being off Twitter. But I digress…
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
I know you guys are itching for me to talk about the video. So there I was watching Thrush on @Lawrence when…
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
…I heard Thrush utter the most perfect pronunciation of "Chutzpah" that I, as a Jewish woman, have ever heard in my life.
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
I was in awe of @GlennThrush 's perfect pronunciation of the word "chutzpah" and thought it would make for a funny video. So I asked for it.
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
I have a rapport with @GlennThrush and felt certain he'd find it funny as well. It was in no way intended to mock his religion.
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
Which also happens to be my own.
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
I called @GlennThrush a few minutes ago to explain myself. We laughed and discussed the upcoming Yom Kippur holiday.
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
I will maintain until I breathe my last breath: Thrush has a lot of chutzpah for his performance on @Lawrence, literally and figuratively.
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
The issue with the video: It was accidentally released too soon. Was planning to write for tonight. Still am. So it lacked proper context.
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
The whole thing was meant to be funny and lighthearted — which are two things Washington is severely lacking right now.
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
.@GlennThrush knew my intentions before I even explained myself. So…if he wants to break the fast with me I'm happy to take him to lunch.
— Betsy Rothstein (@betsyscribeindc) September 28, 2017
Now if anyone has any further questions, I'm happy to answer them. But in my eyes, @GlennThrush will always be the king of "chutzpah."
