First reported in the Washington Blade and confirmed to the Huffington Post’s Sam Stein, the Democratic Party will include a plank supporting same sex marriage rights as part of the party’s platform at the national convention.

The Democratic party will endorse same sex marriage rights at the presidential convention, according to reports. The platform is set to be drafted in two weeks and will be presented at the Democratic party for adoption in Charlotte.

Outgoing Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank told The Advocate that there was no dissent to including gay marriage in the national platform at the party’s drafting committee.

The precise wording of the platform is not available, but the Washington Blade reports that the language backs equality of marriage rights but also rejects the Defense of Marriage Act – a federal law that President Barack Obama’s Department of Justice has refused to enforce in court.

Stein reports that the Democratic party was hesitant to include same sex marriage rights on the platform as recently as March, but the pushback they were receiving from fellow party members evaporated once President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden expressed their support for marriage equality.
