DOJ to Ferguson PD: Stop Wearing ‘I Am Darren Wilson’ Bracelets
Last week, an Instagram user uploaded this photo of a Ferguson police officer wearing an “I Am Darren Wilson” bracelet:
Darren Wilson, of course, is the officer who shot 18-year-old Michael Brown last month. And it turns out that multiple Ferguson police officers have been wearing these bracelets.
Well, just this past weekend, the Department of Justice stepped in and told the Ferguson PD to knock it off:
The [DOJ] letter said the bracelets had “upset and agitated” people and “reinforce the very ‘us versus them’ mentality that many residents of Ferguson believe exists.”
The DOJ said it had been assured by officials with the county and state police, which have been brought in to help in Ferguson, that their officers would not wear them.
The Justice Department also requested that Ferguson officers wear name plates and/or stop obscuring them.
