CNN’s Don Lemon: ‘Lighten Up’ About What Jesus Looked Like

During his recurring commentary segment on the Tom Joyner Radio Show, CNN host Don Lemon recounted a recent experience in which he posted on Twitter a photo of a long-haired carpenter next to a Christmas tree, and joked about whether he was “the real one.”

The Jesus stand-in was white, instantly prompting heaps of criticism from other Twitterers (“It figures your Jesus is white”) who eventually got around to calling Lemon an “Uncle Tom.”

Lemon’s prescription: lighten up.

In response to one follower who thanked Lemon for the laugh, Lemon said, “That’s my kind of person; someone who takes nothing personally or too seriously; especially a Christian who doesn’t judge. Imagine that?”

“Anyone who has read what the Bible says about Jesus knows his origins and what he might have looked like—dark with wavy hair with darker features,” Lemon explained. “But do we know for sure? No. But what I do know for sure, for those of us who have studied the Bible, is that even Jesus had a sense of humor. Is it really that important if Jesus looked like us, black or white or whatever? Isn’t it more important that we act like him and lighten up? And turn the other cheek?”
