Football Fans Boo POTUS and Giuliani During Pregame 9/11 Tributes
In the midst of a contentious election cycle, football fans offered mixed reactions toward political figures who participated in 9/11 tributes — both live and on tape — prior to NFL games on Sunday.
According to The New York Times, fans at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ booed both President Barack Obama and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in a bipartisan display of dissatisfaction with political leaders past and present.
President Obama appeared via taped video message on big screens throughout the league on Sunday. In the footage above, via CBS, the reaction is hard to pick up — as the network cut away from the stadium to show the video. But social media reports indicate he was indeed jeered at MetLife Stadium, and in several other places around the league, including; Baltimore, Philadelphia and Seattle.
Perhaps equally noteworthy was the booing of Rudy Giuliani just a few miles from Ground Zero on the anniversary of 9/11. Giuliani appeared in person at MetLife Stadium to conduct the opening coin toss prior to the Cincinnati Bengals-New York Jets game.
There were some instances of politicians being well received. Notably, former President George W. Bush appeared on the field prior to the New York Giants-Dallas Cowboys game, and was roundly cheered as he was introduced.
