Former POW Bowe Bergdahl Caught Up in California Pot Raid
Police probably got the surprise of their life Tuesday when their raid of a Northern California pot farm turned up former Taliban prisoner of war Bowe Bergdahl.
The local Anderson Valley Advertiser reports that Mendocino County sheriffs swooped in on an illegal marijuana farm and found Bergdahl on the property. Bergdahl is not suspected to have played a role in the operation, and– for once– had the Army’s permission to be off base. After phone calls “all the way up to the Pentagon,” he was released into the custody of a military escort.
Bergdahl spent five years in the captivity at the hands of the Taliban. He was traded back to the United States in May of 2014 in exchange for five Taliban leaders, a deal that was harshly criticized when his former squadmates alleged that Bergdahl was captured after abandoning his post. Finally in March of this year, the Army charged him with desertion.
