Fox Business Network’s Trish Regan Suggests She’d Spend $5k on an iPhone if it Were Made in Kansas

Fox Business Network’s Trish Regan discussed President Donald Trump’s forthcoming trip to Davos and, along with a panel of guests, brainstormed ideas on how to bring factory jobs back to the country. Of course, it didn’t take long to realize that in order for companies to create middle class jobs in the manufacturing sector, prices of goods would have to rise significantly. There is a reason, after all, most of our gadgets are made overseas.
Regan, however, would be willing to pay a lot more for her iPhone if it were made in, say, Kansas. Just how much more? Possibly as much as $5,000?
She started be describing the current state of the goods economy, in which she said prices have hit record lows.
“There’s no inflation in this economy right now,” she said. “We really have seen consumer goods just plummet in terms what the costs are.”
That’s when she made this suggestion:
“If they made it in Kansas and it cost $5,000, I’m still gonna need it. You’re still gonna need it. Jessica’s still gonna need it,” she told guest Tom Borelli.
“That money is then going to support a family in Kansas where you’ve got parents who are going to work. They have the pride of work and they’re able to take care of their family and, guess what, you and I don’t have to foot the bill for the disability payments or the Medicaid or the CHIP program or anything else that comes with a large percentage of people not working.”
Panelist Jessica Tarlov responded negatively to Regan’s notion that a $5,000 iPhone would be a net positive for America.
“I would say, though, about your example. That $5,000 iPhone out of Kansas. I still think that is going to cost too much for Americans,” she said.
Regan noted that the price was just an example, but did go on to say that Americans should perhaps “scale back a little” and “have a little less.”
It must be noted, however, that the most recent iPhone iteration, the iPhone X, already costs $1,000, so, no matter the country of origin, we are getting there.
