GOP Reagan/Bush Official Makes His Shocking Endorsement: ‘I’m Going to Vote For Mrs. Clinton’

Screen Shot 2016-06-16 at 1.06.25 PMIn one of the most visible and high-profile indications that Republicans may go against the grain, an appointee of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush confirms that it is Hillary Clinton — not Donald Trump — who will earn his vote in November.

Richard Armitage worked in the State Department as Deputy Secretary of State from 2001-2005 under President Bush, after a tenure in International Security Affairs for Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Despite his lengthy conservative history, the war veteran told POLITICO today that he can not side with his party’s nominee in 2016.

Armitage said, “If Donald Trump is the nominee, I would vote for Hillary Clinton…[Trump] doesn’t appear to be to be a Republican, he doesn’t appear to want to learn about issues. So I’m going to vote for Mrs. Clinton.” POLITICO’s Michael Crowley called the move, “…one of the most dramatic signs yet,” that rank-and-file members of the GOP may do the unthinkable in the general election.

While Armitage is certainly the first person of his stature within the party to fully rebuke Trump in favor of the Democratic party candidate, he may not be the last. While speaking about many of his conservative peers, Armitage admitted, “They’re in kind of a fog,” about the choice.
