GOP Rep. Files Motion to Kick John Boehner Out of Speaker Position
Republican congressman Mark Meadows filed a motion today to kick John Boehner out of his position as Speaker of the House.
According to Politico, Meadows pushed his motion to vacate the chair, saying that Boehner’s trying to “consolidate power and centralize decision-making, bypassing the majority of the 435 members of Congress and the people they represent.”
It did not go much of anywhere today, but a Meadows spokeswoman told National Journal, “The next step will likely be to file for a discharge petition. This wasn’t something that Mr. Meadows took lightly, he wanted to allow time and consideration for other Members.”
Meadows recently lost his chairmanship of a congressional subcommittee in what was believed to be an act of retribution for not voting for Boehner to be Speaker at the start of the congressional term.
Multiple Republicans tried challenging Boehner in January for the speakership, publicly expressing their outrage with his leadership. Boehner was easily reelected but the fighting ended up making things more tense about House Republicans.
