GOP Rep. Fundraises Off His Pope Boycott: He Acted Like a Pandering Leftist

gosarThe Catholic Republican congressman who boycotted Pope Francis‘ address to Congress is not only defending his actions but also fundraising off of them. Paul Gosar said before the Pope arrived in the U.S. that he was disappointed that His Holiness would be focusing on issues like climate change and not “religious freedom and the sanctity of human life.”

Gosar got plenty of criticism for this and was even mocked by Stephen Colbert for doing so, but Gosar’s standing by his decision.

He sent out a fundraising email to supporters, The Washington Post reports, saying that “Unlike his predecessors, who focused on issues of religious extremism, abortion, and traditional values, Pope Francis has instead given up his chance to make a significant impact on these policies.”

He cites Colbert’s segment and other attacks in the liberal media before making his fundraising pitch:

I need your help to raise $25,000 more by the end of September. YOU can help me defend myself against the left. You may have noticed that the liberal media has embraced this Pope unlike none other in our time… reinforcing an almost rockstar-like status never before seen for the leader of the Catholic Church. This from the left, who generally ridicule religion. So it begs the question as to why they have never before embraced a Pope in this fashion.

He goes on to repeatedly declare that Pope Francis “chose to pander to the liberal left” and so “when a Pope chooses to act and talk like a leftist politician, then he can expect to be treated like one.”
