GOP Sen. Graham Defends Obama’s Drones: ‘Every Member Of Congress Needs To Get On Board’

Following recent revelations about President Obama‘s drone program — including a Justice Department memo that details some legal reasoning behind it — there’s been a flurry of both support and criticism. On Wednesday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) weighed in, defending the president.

“Every member of Congress needs to get on board,” Graham said, according to POLITICO. “It’s not fair to the president to let him, leave him out there alone quite frankly. He’s getting hit from libertarians and the left.

Much of the recent debate has examined the strikes on American citizens, including Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan, who were working for al Qaeda — and were killed in a 2011 drone strike.

“I think the middle of America understands why you would want a drone program to go after a person like Anwar al-Awlaki,” Graham added.

The senator plans to propose a resolution supporting Obama’s use of drones, opening discussion about appropriate actions during war (as well as whom we’re in a war with).

Graham went on to assert: “The process of being targeted I think is legal, quite frankly laborious and should reside in the commander in chief to determine who an enemy combatant is and what kind of force to use.”

And the court would agree, should the matter reach the judicial branch, he said, deeming Obama’s use of drones one of the “highlights” of his presidency.
