Former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson tore into President Trump today over the crude insinuations of his attack against Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
In response to Gillibrand’s recent comments that Trump ought to step down as president because of his multiple sexual misconduct allegations, the president tweeted that she came “begging” for campaign contributions in the past, and “would do anything for them.” The tweet has already garnered a great deal of criticism, and when Carlson was asked about this during an interview with CNN, she said the tweet was “totally sexist.”
“I thought that it was a deliberate takedown of her because she’s a female senator and an effort to try and silence her,” Carlson said. She continued to say that the tweet was “despicable,” and she also echoed those who say that Trump’s tweet implies that Gillibrand would offer sexual favors in exchange for support.
“A lot of people believe that that means she would have done sexual favors,” Carlson said, “and that is absolutely disgusting.”
Carlson was eventually asked to comment on how the national discussion about sexual harassment has reached a critical juncture with today’s special senate election in Alabama. As the debates about Roy Moore‘s alleged sexual abuse continue, Carlson lamented how many people are dismissing Moore’s accusers outright as politically-motivated frauds.
If Roy Moore is elected, Carlson said, “it means that some people believe sexual harassment is political and that’s a shame…We have to all take ownership and say ‘We’re not going to allow this, we’re not going to allow women to be treated this way.'”
