House of Cards May Kill Off Kevin Spacey’s Character for Season 6

Production on House of Cards‘ final season has stopped in the wake of more disturbing allegations against Kevin Spacey, and reports out tonight provide some insight into how producers are rethinking the show’s endgame as a result.
Per Variety, they’re considering privately what some have been suggesting

One scenario being discussed is to kill off Spacey’s character, the villainous Frank Underwood, and have the show’s sixth and final season concentrate on his equally manipulative wife Claire, played by Robin Wright, according to insiders.
This week saw the revelation of sexual harassment and assault allegations against Spacey from House of Cards employees, and there is a new BuzzFeed report with accounts from three more accusers out tonight.
Netflix and MRC suspended production this week, but this Variety report––in addition to a Hollywood Reporter report out tonight––indicate that they’re looking at options on how to proceed with the next season (billed as its final one) instead of pulling the plug entirely.
Per THR‘s report:
Sources say that the shut-down will be for a two-week period — and possibly longer — to provide the writing staff time to rework the season and write Spacey’s Frank Underwood out of the show. Writing out Spacey — who also serves as an exec producer on the drama — is one of the options being considered, with a total shut-down a lesser possibility.
“They shut it down to figure out how to write him out,” one well-placed source tells The Hollywood Reporter of the behind the scenes drama that ushered Netflix into the lucrative scripted originals space.
